From Edo-Era Healing to Modern Memory Support

In the archives of Japanese history lies the story of Nakamura Kōun (1797-1865), a master herbalist whose work is the foundation of Mamaki Memory.

He was driven by a profound belief he shared in his writings: that even discovering "one new plant could bless future generations." This wasn't just a saying; it was a mission that fueled his guiding principle: “local plants, for local people, for local health.”

His expertise was so respected that in 1855, the Japanese government sought his help to solve a deadly health crisis at the famous Iwami Silver Mine—now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. His prevention-focused solution was a breakthrough, and its success was shared across the major mines of Japan.

Today, his direct descendant, Mike Nakamura—pictured here at his ancestor's memorial in Japan—honors this legacy and fulfills that centuries-old teaching, transforming the blessing of a single plant into the Mamaki Memory you can hold today.

        Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to the most common questions about Mamaki Memory®

        What is māmaki?

Māmaki (Pipturus albidus) is a Hawaiian native herb traditionally enjoyed as a smooth, caffeine-free tea. It’s naturally rich in polyphenols (antioxidant compounds) that support everyday wellness.

        Does māmaki tea have caffeine?

No—māmaki is naturally caffeine-free. It’s great day or night.

        What does it taste like?

Clean and mellow with gentle sweetness and low tannins (not bitter). Most people drink it plain; a touch of honey or lemon also works.

        How do I brew it?

Use 1–2 g (about 1 Tbsp loose leaves) per 8 oz / 240 ml water at 190–205°F. Cover and steep 10–15 minutes, then strain and sip hot or over ice.

        Can I re-steep the leaves?

Yes. The same leaves can be re-steeped 1–2 more times—add a few minutes to each steep.

        Can I cold brew it?

Absolutely. Add 2–3 Tbsp leaves to 1 quart (1 L) cool water, refrigerate 8–12 hours, then strain.

How much should I drink per day?

1–3 cups is a common routine. Start with a cup daily and adjust to taste and how you feel.

How is this different from Māmaki Memory®?

Tea is a soothing, whole-leaf brew. Māmaki Memory® provides a consistent, measured dose of concentrated māmaki actives (no brewing) designed to support memory, focus, and calm.*

Prefer a set-and-forget routine? Consider adding Māmaki Memory® to your daily tea habit.

        When will I notice benefits?

Many people simply enjoy the calm clarity of a caffeine-free tea right away. For daily cognitive support, consistency matters—tea + (or) Māmaki Memory® used over time is your best bet.*

        Is māmaki tea safe?

Māmaki has a long history of use as a food-like beverage. If you’re pregnant/nursing, have a medical condition, or take medications (especially for blood pressure or blood thinners), talk to your healthcare provider first.

Where is your māmaki grown and how is quality verified?

Sustainably grown in Hawai‘i, hand-picked, and carefully dried. Each lot is batch-tested for identity and purity; scan the QR/COA code on your package for results.

How should I store it and how long does it last?

Keep sealed in a cool, dry, dark place. Best within 12 months for peak flavor.

What size is the bag and how many cups does it make?

Our 2 oz (56 g) pouch yields roughly 25–50 cups depending on how strong you brew and whether you re-steep.

        Any traditional preparation methods?

Historically, leaves were steeped in bowls heated with hot stones. Your modern kettle replicates the simplicity—pure leaves + hot water.

How sustainable is your Mamaki farming practice?

We practice regenerative farming methods that honor both the land and Hawaiian cultural values. Our Mamaki is grown without synthetic pesticides or chemicals, using sustainable harvesting techniques that allow the plants to regenerate naturally. We work closely with native Hawaiian agricultural practices and maintain the ecological balance of our farm environment on the Big Island.
